Kirtan, a musical meditation based on Sanskrit chants, will be performed live from 5 to 7 p.m., September 10, at the Muse Family Performance Pavilion in Warren Park. Kirtan is a call-and-response song, stemming from ancient India and the bhakti yoga tradition.
The singing accompanied by both classical Indian instruments and acoustic Western instruments. The leader sings a mantra and the audience sings it back. Although the words are in Sanskrit, the power of the meditation is the sound itself and ancient names of God. Chants can go on for up to 40 minutes, and as participants sing, some experience a deep connection with those around them and their God. Musician are invited to bring an acoustic instrument.
