Blues Festival in Allen Features Legendary Performers

The second Allen City Blues Festival, held July 27, at the Allen Event Center, in Allen, features more than a dozen acts on two stages, including Eric Johnson, the Billy Cox Band of Gypsys Experience, Wanda King, Joey Love, Griff Hamlin & The Circle City Horns, Kirby Kelley and The Peterson Brothers Band.

Johnson was named one of the 100 Greatest Guitarists of the 20th Century by Musician magazine. A member of the Musicians Hall of Fame, Cox is the only surviving member of The Jimi Hendrix Experience and the Band of Gypsys. His signature playing style was an integral part of the legendary performance at Woodstock. Kelley, a slide guitarist, wears the crown of King of the Blues beating out more than 4000 guitarists for the honor as judged by talent such as Grammy award winner Pete Anderson.

The Guitar Sanctuary, located within a shaded beer garden adjacent to the arena, will feature sets from noted artists, headlined by the Maylee Thomas Band that mixes gospel-based blues with a soulful rock sound.

The festival begins at 2 p.m. Sets begin at the Guitar Sanctuary immediately after the doors open at 1.
